Intro to Mountaineering - Aug. 24th - 29th/09

"Smiles, sunshine and mountaineering skills on the Wapta!

This past week saw Yamnuska guides Barry Blanchard and Jason Billing enjoying the best weather of the summer on the Wapta Ice field for the Intro to Mountaineering course. Under clear blue skies we learned essential mountaineering skills including crampon techniques, safe group travel and route finding on a glacier, crevasse rescue and map and compass skills. In between practicing new skills we made ascents of Mt.Gordon and Mt.Olive, with the participants putting there new skills to use out front leading the rope teams! Evenings were spent in the comfort of the Bow Hut, sharing stories, laughing and eating the seemingly endless supply of delicious food that Jen in the kitchen had prepared for us. After 6 days without hardly seeing a cloud, our group returned to the trailhead, tired, happy and with a new set of skills to allow them to enjoy the mountains safely. A great week!"
