On July 31, 1913, Conrad Kain, legendary mountain guide, successfully guided William Foster and Alberta MacCarthy to the summit of Mt Robson to complete the historic first ascent of this formidable peak. The ascent was completed via the Robson Glacier and the North East Face, now known as the Kain Face. Without the availability of our modern equipment, the ascent was way ahead of its time.

To commemorate the 100th year anniversary of Conrad Kain’s remarkable ascent, Yamnuska Mountain Adventures is offering two scheduled climbs in the summer of 2013.

At 3,954m Mount Robson is the tallest peak in the Canadian Rockies. Climbers come from around the world to attempt its icy flanks on the way to the summit. The great bulk of this heavily glaciated peak creates its own climate and with all of the world's great peaks, the summit is never assured. Mt Robson is a much sought after test piece for experienced mountaineers.

This is a truly challenging objective for those with a number of intermediate and advanced peaks under their belt. Reaching the summit of is for many the ultimate Canadian Rockies mountaineering objective. And what better time to try, then the 100th year anniversary of the first ascent.

This trip will be lead by Yamnuska's senior mountain guides including Barry Blanchard and Grant Meekins. Barry has been on the mountain 9 times including putting up a new route on the Emporer Face 'Infinite patience'. Grant has arguably been our most successful guide on Robson over the past few years. You will have decades of experience with our team.

The Columbia Icefields is home to 225 square kilometers of glacier ice that is in places over 350m thick. The area hosts 11 of the 54 highest peaks in the Canadian Rockies and is arguably the best location in the Rockies for ski mountaineering. Mt Columbia, the highest peak on the icefield and in Alberta, will be the main objective of this ski expedition. The seemingly limitless views of the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains will form the backdrop for this trip.

This trip is an excellent choice for adventurers looking to learn the skills involved in successfully planning and completing ski expeditions. Ski mountaineers on this trip should have previous winter camping and glacier travel experience and have a high level of fitness.

The SW Face/Ridge is the ultimate scramble offering beautiful views of Paradise Valley and the Valley of the Ten Peaks. We begin our day surrounded by prominent cliffs and lofty peaks but once out of the trees, the views open up in all their splendour. Looking down through the larches, the radiant blue of Moraine Lake appears with nearby peaks reflected in the waters. Climbing this beginner 11'000er peak will 'peak' your interest and leave you wanting more.

Along the Icefields Parkway, just North of Lake Louise, this majestic peak was the second Canadian Rockies 11,000er to be climbed in 1895. Standing on the summit you will be following in the footsteps of some of the Canadian Rockies' most famous mountaineers: Charles Fay, Charles Thompson, and Philip Abbot. Abbott wrote about the ascent in Appalachia "I have never seen anything which equaled the view from the summit of Mt. Hector, and I do not expect to see anything which will excel it...There was nothing visible but the unbroken wilderness of ice and snow and crag, an ocean without shores whose waves were mountain ranges." During this trip you'll enjoy a slightly more modern view of the breathtaking peaks, valleys, and icefields that surround you.

Rarely visited Mt. Cline boarders the wild White Goat Wilderness Area and is one of only a handful of 11,000 foot peaks east of the Continental Divide. It was one of the last 11,000ers to be climbed in the area and was first summitted by Jimmy Simpson and Rudolph Aemmer in 1927 as they successfully guided a small group. The remote ruggedness of this area along with a beautiful sub alpine lake campsite and views of the David Thompson, Mounts Wilson and Murchison are highlights that will add to the enjoyment of this trip. Although not technically difficult, some exposed climbing makes this an experience to remember!

Bugaboo Spire is one of Canada's great peaks and our certified Bugaboos climbing guides know this area very well. First climbed in 1916 by Conrad Kain, it has been a treasured objective ever since. There are two classic routes. The S.E. Ridge, Kain's 1st ascent route still has a sting in its tail. Climbing the 5.7 slab on the Gendarme you'll wonder how he did it in hobnail boots. The N.E. ridge is one of the best lines on the continent.

Bugaboo Spire is surrounded by other spectacular spires, vertiginous Snowpatch Spire is a little lower but has fantastic technical routes for rock climbers. The W. Ridge of Pigeon Spire is one of the most enjoyable technical scrambles to be found anywhere and the smaller Crescent Spires offer enjoyable climbing at every level. Then there are the Howser Towers which dominate the entire group. One of the most famous climbs in the world, the Chouinard-Beckey route, is on the South Tower's west face.

This famed group of granite spires is found in the Purcell Mountains west of Canmore and Banff (3.5 hour drive) and can't be more highly recommended for those of you interested in high quality alpine rock climbing. It is served by an excellent alpine hut or you can camp in one of the most spectacular campgrounds known. This area is ideal for private and custom climbing programs from 3 - 7 days. It is also a great place to experience mountaineering with your kids (10 yrs. plus). Even the less famous routes offer amazing climbing objectives.

Mt. Athabasca is one of the most accessible and enjoyable big peaks in the Canadian Rockies. Routes of varying difficulty make it suitable for both beginner and experienced alpinists. Its position on the edge of the vast Columbia Icefields make for spectacular summit views and its glaciation makes for fine snow and ice mountaineering.

A climb of Athabasca with a certified Yamnuska mountain guide is a great and memorable experience.

Mount Athabasca is located at the eastern edge of the Columbia Icefields on the ridge between the Athabasca and Saskatchewan Glaciers. It is immediately adjacent to the Banff-Jasper Parkway from where it is climbed in a day. This makes it an ideal objective for anyone with limited time. In addition several nearby training sites make it an ideal finale to a general mountaineering course. It is 3,491m. high (11,453 ft).

The Ghost Valley is a hidden gem of classic gun smoke colored limestone cliffs. Difficult access and the remote nature of the area make this a secluded place for both single and multi-pitch rock climbing. There is an excellent mix of both bolted and naturally protected routes to choose from in the area that will provide high quality climbing for the program. The low instructor ratio will ensure a flexible agenda with personalized coaching and lots of climbing. The objective of this program is to get in as much climbing as possible from our camp in this beautiful area.

By camping in the Ghost Valley, we will have quick access to our rock routes.

Not many 'hikes' involve glacier travel - this one does. North of Lake Louise in Banff National Park a series of gentle Icefields stretch for miles across the Great Divide of the Canadian Rockies. Known collectively as the Wapta Icefields they provide a unique opportunity for fit walkers and hikers to enjoy amazing mountain scenery normally reserved for mountaineers. We start at Bow Lake and hike up to and over the Bow Glacier to the Peyto Glacier staying in alpine huts en-route. A truly unique hike.

This program is ideal for those hikers wanting a more casual mountaineering experience without sacrificing the scenery.

This is Canada's premier beginner mountaineering instruction course. For almost four decades our course has produced many dedicated mountaineers and has been the catalyst to life-long climbing friendships. Based out of the Bow Hut on the Banff National Park Wapta Icefields this comprehensive program is designed for hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts who want to get a solid grounding in the sport of mountaineering. The glacier and surrounding peaks will be our classroom for the duration of this course. Unlike other coursess, we provide food, hut accommodations, transport to the trailhead and group/technical gear - all you need to bring is your adventurous attitude!

Our course curriculum is constantly updated to reflect the most current mountaineering standards and practices. Our instructors are passionate mountaineers and educators who are certified by the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides.

During the day, build your skills and climb peaks. In the evening, share stories and lessons with your fellow mountaineers while relaxing in the comfortable Bow Hut.

This Canadian Rockies mountaineering course meets the prerequisites of most high altitude expedition companies who require their participants to have a basic mountaineering course prior to being accepted for an expedition.

"I can't praise this course enough - clearly Yamnuska is a premier outfit from excellent guides to a thorough understanding of how to introduce a beginner to this incredible environment - everything was top notch and highly professional. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the program to anyone. It is clear that your staff possess a passion for the mountains, an exceptional level of knowledge, a lack of ego, and patience with those of us who are just learning that inspires confidence and lays a foundation for a lifetime of adventure. Thank you so much!." Marnie, August 2012

The Wapta Traverse is the ultimate Canadian Rockies hut to hut ski tour. The Wapta Icefields spread for many miles north along the continental divide from the Lake Louise area. With vast glaciers, easy peaks and a superlative hut system, the area is perfect for a great ski traverse. As one of our favorite winter playgrounds, the Wapta is pretty much a second home for our guides and no one quite does the Wapta Traverse like Yamnuska!

We offer two versions of the Wapta Traverse: the 4-Day Classic Wapta Traverse and the 6-Day Extended Wapta Traverse. The Classic Traverse will suit those with more limited time and is a better option for intermediate ski tourers. It starts from Bow Lake and finishes at Sherbrooke Lake just west of Lake Louise. The Extended Traverse starts at Peyto Lake near the northernmost end of the icefields and finishes at Sherbrooke Lake.

Crevasse rescue is an essential skill that needs constant upgrading to ensure you deal with a crevasse emergency in the fastest and most efficient manner. It is not a skill you learn once and only test when there is an emergency. This course will keep your skills current on preferred practices and techniques. There is a distinct educational difference for crevasse rescue for ski mountaineering versus summer mountaineering.

We are offering two types of crevasse rescue courses this year. The first is "Crevasse Rescue for Ski Mountaineers" featured below and will be held at the beginning of March just as the traditional ski mountaineering season gets going. The second, "Advanced Crevasse Rescue" will be held in May and June and includes a refresher plus training in 2-man crevasse rescue. Please note that these are not beginner programs. Most people who take these course have already taken an introductory mountaineering or ski mountaineering course and want to keep their skills current.

In this comprehensive 3 day introduction to general mountaineering, you'll receive instruction on techniques for travelling on snow and ice, an understanding of safe glacier travel and crevasse rescue. You will learn the current mountaineering practices plus understand gear and equipment fit and use. We then practice your newly acquired skills on a summit bid of a classic peak on the Columbia Icefields - ideally Mt Athabasca if conditions allow.

This course is designed for people with no previous mountaineering experience but it might just ignite a life-long passion for mountaineering and the outdoors.

Along the Icefields Parkway, just North of Lake Louise, this majestic peak was the second Canadian Rockies 11,000er to be climbed. Standing on the summit of Mt Hector you will be following in the footsteps of some of the Canadian Rockies' most famous mountaineers: Charles Fay, Charles Thompson, and Philip Abbot. You will enjoy amazing panoramic views of the Lake Louise group and the Wapta Icefields on this ski trip.

This is a great spring ski mountaineering objective on a tall peak! To position ourselves for the summit, we will spend a night camping at the base of the glacier that leads to the summit ridge. This is great winter camping experience. Early the next morning we will enjoy the sunrise from our camp and begin our summit attempt on skis. Beautiful views and a long glacier ski run will be the reward for our efforts on this 11,000 foot classic.
