This program has prepared me to work in the industry. It has given me the skills to become more and more skilled in the mountains for the rest of my life. I’d recommend this course because it not only teaches you how to be skilled and safe, but how to work with a group, build relationships for a lifetime, and learn more about yourself. What is the Mountain Skills Semester?

- Rock climbing techniques, anchor building, rescue & multi-pitch systems
- Ice climbing movement and protection on frozen waterfalls
- Glacier travel and crevasse rescue
- Backcountry skiing and splitboarding fundamentals and avalanche terrain management
- Wilderness navigation and route finding
- Avalanche safety, including AST 1 or 2 certification
- Wilderness first aid (80-hour Wilderness First Aid certification included)
- Winter travel skills, including snowpack evaluation, group decision-making, and terrain assessment
- Expedition planning, group leadership, and self-sufficiency in remote environments
Each week builds upon the last, giving you time to absorb, apply, and refine your skills in a variety of terrain and seasonal conditions—with a focus on developing good judgment, situational awareness, and a mindset for managing risk.
This is one of the few courses offered that teaches technical outdoor skills at a high level. It would take years of experience to learn the same amount as you can in this course. This program unlocked a whole new array of mountain activities. I see this course as the beginning of a lifetime of alpine, rock, snow and ice climbing and skiing. (2025)
