Rock Climbing

Discover Rock Climbing in the Canadian Rockies

Rock climbing is one of the most exciting ways to experience the Canadian Rockies. From beginner-friendly crags to classic multi-pitch routes, the region offers climbs for every skill level, with breathtaking scenery around Canmore, Banff, and Lake Louise. Thanks to the rise of indoor climbing gyms, more people than ever are learning the skills needed to take their passion outdoors.

At Yamnuska Mountain Adventures, we offer guided rock climbing courses and programs for all levels. Whether you’re stepping on a rope for the first time or aiming to tick off legendary climbs, our expert guides will help you build skills, confidence, and unforgettable memories.

The climbing season runs May through September, with lower-elevation crags often climbable into early October, while higher alpine routes typically wrap up by mid-September.

Discover Rock Climbing: Experiential Rock Climbing programs (half-day and full-day instruction) generally run from May to mid-September. These are held at climbing areas in Banff, Kananaskis and Canmore and provide great accessible venues for an introduction to this rewarding sport.

Rock climbing is accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels—no brute strength required. Beginner routes feel more like climbing a ladder when you use your legs efficiently instead of pulling with your arms. With proper technique and expert coaching, you can progress confidently, while advanced climbs develop over years of skill, strength, and experience.

Rock Climbing Courses

Learn rock climbing at single-pitch or top-rope areas near Banff, Canmore, and Lake Louise. Top-roping uses an anchor at the top while a partner belays from below. Most of our two-day beginner courses include an optional multi-pitch day, giving you the chance to complete your first guided multi-pitch climb.

Dress in layered, close-fitting clothing to stay comfortable in changing mountain conditions. Bring water, high-energy snacks, and sun protection, including SPF and UV-rated layers for exposed skin.

Rock climbing is a fun way to stay active, challenge yourself, and enjoy the outdoors. Whether you’re a first-timer or an experienced climber, the Canadian Rockies offer unforgettable adventures, and we’d love to guide your next climb.

Beginner Programs

  • Rock Climbing Level 1 – Outdoor Rock Intro: Designed for those who have never climbed before or who have done some basic climbing either in the gym or outdoors. Learn basic climbing movement skills and top rope techniques for rock climbing outdoors. An introduction to the skills necessary for seconding on both sport and ‘trad’ multi-pitch climbs is also included.
  • Rock Climbing Level 2 – Learn to Lead: Rock 2 focuses on the skills needed to become a confident sport climbing leader. We will develop the technical skills required to belay, lead and clean single pitch sport climbs as well as develop movement skills to efficiently move across the rock while leading.
  • Lead Climbing Essentials: This 3-day Lead Climbing Essentials course teaches the skills and confidence needed for sport and trad leading, covering quickdraw use, lead strategy, anchor building, and natural protection. Hands-on practice helps climbers lead with precision and confidence.
  • Rock Leader Camp with Sean Isaac: The goal of this five-day camp is to review, learn and practice these skills in order to have a fun, safe summer on the rock. Each of the five-days is devoted to a specific topic that is key to becoming a solid leader on rock: sport climbing tactics, trad climbing gear placements, multi-pitch technical systems, rope rescue and short roping.
  • Private Multi-pitch & Instructional Rock Climbing: Ready to take the next step in your rock climbing adventure.  Yamnuska’s skilled guides are available for private guiding for any new skill or on any multi-pitch rock route in the Canadian Rockies.

Advanced Programs

For the experienced rock climber, we have several options for additional training or guiding on multi-pitch routes.

  • Rock Climbing Level 3 – Multi-Pitch Climbing: This course focuses on the skills required to successfully and efficiently complete multi-pitch climbs at almost any rock climbing destination. Skill development will focus on: route selection, belaying methods in the multi-pitch setting, protecting both the leader and the second while climbing, anchor construction and considerations for multi-pitch climbing, route finding on route, rappel descents and emergency preparedness.
  • Rock Climbing Level 4 – Trad Rock Leader: The Trad Rock Leader course consists of two days of intensive traditional rock climbing training with an optional “Plus Day” on an advanced multi-pitch climb.
  • Rock Climbing Level 5 – Rock Rescue & Advanced Ropework: Learn the basics of self and partner rescue on rock. Rescue for Rock Climbers will give you these tools so that you can be more confident in dealing with an emergency situation in the rock climbing environment.
  • Castle Mountain Alpine Rock Climbing: Discover a classic alpine rock adventure in the Canadian Rockies on this 3-day Castle Mountain program, featuring multi-pitch climbing and expert ACMG/IFMGA guiding. Build skills on legendary routes and classic summits while enjoying hands-on learning and the comfort of the new Castle Mountain Hut.
  • Best of the Rockies Multipitch Climbing: 3-day multi-pitch program. One of our most adventurous climbing programs will see you seconding some of the most picturesque and towering multi-pitch routes that can be found in the Canadian Rockies
