Chhering first met Dave Stark, at the time Yamnuska’s Director of Operations, during a 2012 Canadian military expedition to Island Peak in Nepal. It was during this expedition that he also met John Clarkson, a civilian on the expedition. John mentioned that Chhering should come to Canada and the two continued to keep in touch. Obtaining a visa was one of the biggest challenges for Chhering, but on his third attempt, he finally received a tourist visa with the help of sponsorship letters from both John and Yamnuska.
Chhering spent 2 ½ months in Canada during the winter of 2013/2014, doing Avalanche Operations courses and learning to ski. John was a huge supporter of Chhering during this time and they remain like family to this day. Chhering went on to obtain his work permit in 2015 and permanent residency in 2019, and finally Citizenship just yesterday.
Congratulations again Chhering!
