John James and Chris Webber’s goal of escaping the Oklahoma heat was achieved on a wintery trip to the Wapta Icefields. From September 6th to 10th, I joined these two adventurers on a mountaineering trip that took us up on the glaciers and peaks around the Bow and Peyto huts.
Fresh snow welcomed us to the glaciers and, along with stormy weather, made for some tricky travel. The first three days found us wading through snow, weaving around hidden crevasses and navigating through complete whiteouts. Despite the adverse conditions we were able to work on crevasse rescue skills, do some ice climbing and spend full days exploring the area.
On the fourth day of our trip, we were treated to a spectacular weather window allowing us to summit Hable peak on our way back from Peyto to Bow Hut.
What a great way to enjoy the mountains in the fall!
