The first Intro to Mountaineering course for this summer brought twelve participants from all corners of Canada together with Yamnuska guides Grant Meekins and Richard Howes. We had a memorable approach to Bow Hut with snow drifts in the forest and deep snow on the final sections. This at least meant that we had ideal conditions for the next days’ snow skills sessions!
The wintery atmosphere continued as we climbed the NW ridge of Mt. Olive (3130m/10,269ft) amidst snow showers and sunshine. A couple of days later, as we climbed Mt. Gordon (3203m/10,508ft)) we were rewarded with clearing skies and a glorious view of a pristine Wapta Icefields and distant peaks from the sunny summit.
Every available moment during the week was filled with learning new skills, climbing peaks and plenty of socializing in the evening. On the drive back to town more than a few heads were nodding as the fresh air and rewarding week took its toll.
