This past weekend represented the official start of our 2010 and 2011 ice climbing season. Our First beginner ice climbing course and our Ice Evolution program all started on Saturday.
The usual spots such as the Junkyards in Canmore and King Creek in Kananaskis were busy. Its great to see so many people take to this incredible sport and if the number people out ice climbing on the weekend is any indication of the future of this activity I’d say it has a healthy future.
The ice in pretty much all of the locations is either fully formed or largely formed and very climbable. With each day this will only improve so if you have been waiting for the ice to get fatter before you get on it, we are definitely there now.
Aside from the Junkyards and King Creek we had people in the following locations:
- Grotto Canyon: Very busy on the weekend
- Rogan’s Gully: Good ice and conditions
- Haffner Creek: Seems generally busy even during week days but good ice and mixed routes
- Wedge Smear: Good ice
We hope to see you out there.
