May 3 – 16, 2009 – Rock Climbing in Skaha, BC and the Bow Valley, AB
We had a glorious time camping and climbing by Lake Skaha. In the day we top-roped, led climbs for the first time, placed Trad gear and gained more experience on multi-pitch routes. We pushed ourselves to scary (but safe) limits. In the evening we took off our tight, stinky shoes and rested our sore fingers. We ate far too much by the campfire (Sammy setting a new speed eating record), and some (you know who you are!) drank too much and started chasing rainbows. We also celebrated Gaspar’s birthday with a special gringo style Pinada to celebrate his Mexican roots.
The next section was Alpine Rock. We stayed at one of the dodgiest campsites in the Bow Valley. Other than being introduced to the local ‘flavor’ on May “24” weekend, we were introduced to short-roping, aid climbing and learned to climb in more adverse conditions. We multi-pitched on Kid Goat, and some of us gate crashed the U of Calgary graduation ceremony in our scummy climbing gear so that we could try out their climbing gym.
