The Javiers, father and son, came all the way from Guadalajara Mexico to spend a few days with us in the mountains. They were keen to try out ice climbing, and even with the season coming to a close we managed a great day of intro skills at King Creek, and the following day was spent getting off the ground on the multipitch climb Chantilly Falls.
They did a great job with the ice climbing, but despite all of the snow sticking to the mountains, wanted to try a scrambling peak. As we drove home from Kananaskis Country on the second day, Mt.Yamnuska caught their eye and they were quite excited that I told them we could do a traverse of the mountain to finish our trip!
The next morning was wintery and snowy in Canmore, but as we drove east to Mt.Yamnuska the weather improved and we enjoyed a very atmospheric ascent. A bit wintery on the trail hiking up in the morning, some windy and snow covered rock sections on the traverse, and then warm spring conditions on the walk down…..perfect! The views were great and the scrambling route had just enough challenge to keep everyone interested, including the cable traverse! It’s always a pleasure to take out a family, and see them bond and enjoy their time together in the mountains – always a positive experience. The Javiers are already thinking about a Wapta trip this summer together, we hope to see them there!
