Starting with our upcoming Fall 2011 Mountain Skills Semester, we now have two exciting new professional certifications for graduates. This is THE program to take for those who want to become self sufficient mountaineers. Now with our two new certifications, graduates will immediately be able to work in the outdoor and climbing industry.
As part of the new program, students will be eligible to receive the follow two new certifications in addition to the ‘Avalanche Skills Training 1 & 2′ and ’80-hour Wilderness First Responder’ certifications:
- ‘Level 1 Climbing Gym Instructor’ through the ACMG
- ‘Apprentice Interpreter Accreditation’ through the Interpretive Guides Association
Our goal is to improve everyone’s technique and skill level no matter where they are starting out with their climbing ability, so even if you have never experienced any mountain sport, we’ll get you out and up to an intermediate/advanced level on the semester. The only real prerequisite for the semester is an intermediate ski ability level, which is important as much of the winter portion of the program is in the backcountry traveling on skis. You should be able to ski most runs at the ski hill and be able to link parallel turns down steeper Blue and Black Diamond runs. We do not require you to have had any previous rock or ice climbing experience, since our guides will be instructing you on safe rock movement, starting at the basics and moving through to advanced skills as the program progresses.
With these new certifications our students will be able to work as an Apprentice Hiking Guide in Banff National Park and also as a Climbing Gym Instructor throughout Canada upon completion of the semester.
This program has also been certified by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada for the tuition, education and textbook tax credits. In other words, students can claim this on their income tax as having attended an eligible educational institution since it meets the education and training development requirements.
